Hi, A friend has just got hold of a 1984 imported 1100 kat. It has had the factory mags replaced with wire wheels that are aluminium date stamped and all. The problem is that there is way to much side ways play in the rear wheel and the tyre is touching the brake stay rod. Not having taken it off yet I don't know if a spacer/bearing is missing or in the wrong spot or what. Can any one tell me if a modification has to be done when fitting the wires up.

Regard Ray.

If the stock alloy-wheel spacers have been used in the wires, you'll experience pretty-much what you're describing...

I'm pretty sure the hubs are different widths, with the crush-spacer between the bearings being a different length, which then requires a different-width spacer between the hub and the brake caliper bracket on the RH side.

There may be some dimension detail on the Mick Hone site - just track down the parts lists of the alloy and wire wheels and do a direct comparison.

Pretty sure it's left hand spacer is the same, right hand spacer is ~10mm longer?

There are two spacers in the RH side - one between the bearing and the caliper bracket, and one between the caliper bracket and the swingarm.

It's that inner one next to the bearing that's different - 64740-45002 (20mm x 24mm) for the alloy wheels, and 64740-49000 (unknown width) for the wires.

There is a spacer (59214-49000) required under the disc as well to space it correctly for the caliper or it will rub against the inside edge.

I ran without the under disc spacer for years - the caliper clears, the conical sheetmetal is a little tall and folds where the disc spokes hit it. I sorted that out recently when I slotted a front disc onto the back end - machined a spacer out of some 5mm plate, and re-organised my (non standard) spacer stack. Non standard swingarm too, so nothing is the same.

Great to be back on the site. You guys helped me heaps a few years ago when I was getting my 82 SXZ on the road. Thanks for the very detailed information including part numbers. I will be pulling the wheel off this Thursday night. I have gone from having no idea to being well armed with the above information. I am sure I have seen such a spacer in a box of Kat parts I bought some time ago that looks like the one gtboy has posted. Will let you all know how it goes. Thanks again.

Don't worry people I am seriously thinking about it. I am talking to work about how it would go if I had the time off. Well now back to the the rear wheel problem. I did have the disc spacer but decided to keep it, so my mate had one spun up for $100.00. Problem is he fitted it and had some sort of lock up problem with either the spacers or brake caliper or god knows what else and tried to dive the thing on the centre stand. To night I have gone to have a look and found the r/h bearing has grabbed and turned spinning in the hub. These is now at least a 6-8 thou lip in the hub so the r/h bearing housing nip has gone, also now that at least I was able to spin the wheel in the swing arm after mucking around if is buckled ( impact flat spot ) and may be unserviceable. I have given some instructions as to what is next, but most importantly I am to be there when what ever wheel gets fitted next happens. The spacers are all the same when you run the part numbers, spacer 64740 49000 is not a good number. Would any one have a genuine yes I know they are gold aluminium rear rim.
Will keep you all informed. Ray

I know they are not gold colored, ment like gold to find. Thanks Ray

Ok Good news, we rebored the r/h side hub and rebushed it to take a new wheel bearing. All good no play and it is now on the road. Bad news, we have several people away from work this week so I will not get to the gathering this week end. I will take a week of next year and be there. I am sure I will be missing a great time. Every one, have a great time and be careful on the road.

Thanks for the update Ray, pity it hasn't worked out for this year. See you there same bat-time same bat-channel next year.

Cheers,
Glen.
