So with the forum being off for a while, surely you lot have done some Kat or related stuff?

I need to get some photos up but my Kat now has a new clutch after experiencing some slippage... had to get that sorted before SoO! Also new front/back tyres, and finally some valve cover end caps at long last. Oh, and a new indicator relay after it cried enough on Monday.

Great work! on getting the site back and running Pete. I'm not an FB person, so even though things had slowed on here the last year or so, I still liked checking in now and again.

Cheers,

Paul

Same Paul, no FB for me, the forum is it, more than happy to get it back up and running!

Yep, no FB for me so it is great to have the Forum back, thanks Pete. My news is the Kat Project I have been planning for the last couple of years has reached the serious stage, bolting it together. COVID stuffed things about as many of the parts came from overseas and air-freight became an issue with limited and some times no flights at all. Anyway, frame now has an engine installed and the spacers to adapt a set of 1985 Slabbie wheels have been made and are off to be anodised on Monday. Working on grafting a 2005 GSXR1000 rear brake and master to the Kat this week, almost finished.

Hope to have forks sorted next week, bought a set of forks from Performance Motorcycle Creative in Japan and a TNK fork spring set to reduce fork weight. Once the Kat is on wheels I can sort out sidestand height, making an aluminium sidestand for it, when I say making, I'll fabricate the ally pieces and send it out for welding. New bearings for wheels, triple tree and swingarm have been installed, new swingarm bushes done. Still plenty to do but in a week or so it will start to look like a Kat.

Cheers.

Do we get to see photos?

Good job on getting the Forum right.

......your rr indicator is appealing for some love.....

Hi All

It's nice to have the site back up running. Thanks to those who made the effort to get it done. More or less finished running in the 750. Dumped the running in oil and filter at 1,000 km and am currently at about 1,500 km. Will look to check valve clearance at about 2,000. Once it started opening her up a bit, it became apparent that it was lean in the mid-range, pulled the tops off the carbs and the needles were all one clip leaner than standard, so someone misunderstood the memo about raising and lowering needle clips. I know, I should have checked rather than assumed... Put these back to the std position for jetting runs. The bike came without a rear air box and I had a pod filter that fits the end of the front box/plenum chamber. So its likely to need to up a size or two in the main jet. Had a set of 120s in the jet box, which is 3 sizes above std. So I though I'd start there.

During the plug chop run the engine changed tone and performance dropped suddenly. Oh dear! Pulled the plugs and No.1 was sooty. She was still running but the idle had got rough. She ran sweet from off-idle to about ½ throttle. After pulling the carbs in and out a couple of times and discovered a few tiny holes in the diaphragm of the No.1 carb. Swapped the slide between No.1 and No.4 carb but the problem stayed with No.1 cylinder. Decided to check the coils and found this

So a new coil ordered. The 115 and 117.5 jets have arrived. Once the electrics are sorted I'll resume the jetting.

Oh ooops, that's a nice fat, healthy spark... in the wrong place! :D

Love your work as always though Darryl and glad to hear she's going well aside from that bit!

Thanks Muddy and Pete.

Yes I'll sort out the gremlins. What I like most is that she handles like she's on rails. Super stable, rock solid on the rutted tracks we call roads in NZ. It's really neutral steering and confidence inspiring. Even with the skinny 110/90 rear tyre. Although this may be part of the reason it is so much fun to ride, it's as close to the standard size and profile. Seems to have plenty of grip. I'm in two minds about up sizing to a 120/80 when this skin is done, which is the largest size for the 2.15 wide rear rim will handle without totally buggering the profile.

Awesome! If it feels good, why change it?

I used to run 100/90-18 and 110/90-18 on the 450 with its 1.6" rim up front and 1.85" on the back, and it was horrible with the profile too pinched. It would be ok in a straight line, ok in the middle of the corners, but getting there was not nice. Reverted to 90/90-18 and 100/90-18 and much improved. I've now reverted to the stock sizing of 3.00-18 and 3.50-18 when changing to Metzeler ME22s and it's still great.

On the Kat I love it with the stock 100/90-18 up front and 130/90-17 on the rear too.

i ended up going to hysterical rego with the vintage japanese motorcycle club. i highly recommend them, and i've been riding my bike more than ever.
