VIN Plates

Can someone tell me when VIN plates where actually first used / attached in Australia?

I have approached the WA transport department but could not get a clear answer and am trying to find the origin of one of my bikes.

AFAIK and I maybe wrong..
"Compliance plates" stating ADR etc started 69/70 or there abouts depending on manufacturer.

VIN system of numbering vechicles started in 89 this system also stated to use the chassis number if no VIN.
Prior to that chassis (frame) AND /OR engine number used for identification...

Seems No plate can be registered but tends to be a headache...

Cheers John

Just further to John's comments - I think it's later than 1970 for bikes (dunno about cars).

My Waterbottle is a '74 model, original Australian delivery and it has no compliance plate.
My Kats have them and I don't own anything in between, so some time after '74 is closer to the mark I reckon.

Just as an aside, it's not difficult at all to register a bike without a compliance plate as long as it never had one fitted for that year in Australia.
I just got a safety cert for the Waterbottle and took it to TMR and it was all good.
Same, same with my T20 ('66 model).

If you import a bike that's pre-'89, and it would have had a compliance plate fitted otherwise, you can get it registered in QLD via the LO1 'plate' process.

17 Digit Vin was standardised in the US in 81, And enforced in Oz from 1988 onwards with the release of the Third Edition ADRs - ADR 61 is the VIN section.

Compliance plates were 69 onwards for cars, and July 75 onwards for bikes.

Are you talking compliance plates or the 17 digit VIN? VINs are about 86/87 I think from my bikes, compliance plates early 70's I'll check tonight for you. I know my 1963 Honda only has the chassis number stamped on it and I know my 1974 GT380 has a compliance plate but definitely no VIN. I know my FZ750 has no VIN and its an 85 model. Let me check the ZXR at it's 1989.

Australian Compliance / VIN plate with the month / year stamped on them.

My '79 GS1000S does not have one and the licence papers state that it is exempt from having a plate fitted but no one can tell me why nor when the plates were fitted in Australia. The story I have been told on my GS was that a mate of the guy I purchased it from bought it new in WA and was to be the first actually here. But........ a couple of things do not seem to be adding up.

As stated above - Compliance plates were mandatory from Mid '75 on motorcycles, and 17 digit VIN was Mandatory in Oz from 88 on.
