unusual noise

half way from Perth to home I hear a unfamiliar noise when turning out of a side road onto the Hwy
koongk koongk koongk
the noise coming and going so I pulled up on the next side road and put the bike up on the centre stand, spun the back wheel and then restarted the engine and didn't hear the noise , so rode a bit further up the road and the noise came back again,
so stopped in the next closest side road, put the bike on centre stand ,spun the back wheel and started motor and put it in gear but still no noise, then rode it another twenty k's, over took a few cars and trucks and then while riding threw a second town of Donnybrook heard this noise again so pulled into a parking lot and put it up on the centre stand and had a good look up under neath to see if the sprocket nut was done up, though still no noise when I spun the back wheel and the nut was good,But a while back ,I had lost a sprocket nut , in the process of doing this the out side plate of the joiner link fell off as the clip was missing, mmmmmmmmmmmm, well this was not the first time either that a joiner link clips gone MIA,so fortunately I carry a spare clip complete with joiner link and was able to make the fix and ride home last night .

Good find Pat and take care.

Good find Pat! I recall a ride where Glen lost his but he wasn't so lucky and his chain unspooled... fortunately he caught it in time and made it off the side of the road safely but we never found that master link.

On the plus side we now know fencing wire is good for about 40kph as a substitute while finding a spot with mobile phone reception :D

A tip I got was to put a dab of threebond on the retaining clip to keep it in place, so far so good for me.

Well this might have been said before but halfway between Isa and camooweal at 170 clicks the rear support for the chain guard fatigued and the guard fell into the chain and concerted into nothing. After changing pants and throwing guard into Mulga no retaining clip! So 175 K to camooweal 1 workshop no clip. Said l some wire please. Got me from camooweal to Barkley station to three ways to Alice, which is two days hard riding in 1989. Can't beat a pair of pliers and some wire. Cheers

...............the Three Bond - which you can buy in BRENDALE - being white, also allows you to easily spot the M/L and hence notice if it is missing.

Sounds sufficiently scary John!! But good to know the wire is a tried and true bush fix :D

Of course it can be bought in BRENDALE Derek! You just can't get a crankshaft repaired there... I still reckon we're missing someone there somewhere, surely there can't be a service not found in BRENDALE???

Highly likely that Mick @ Motorcycle Mad in BRENDALE could be an agent for a crank builder so technically, you could get it done in BRENDALE...... no?

Ah! Very good point Reg! And yep, Mick is the man who gave me the number... so yep ;)

Well there you go.... BRENDALE.... capitol of the world for 'stuff'... might have a beer this Saturday at the BRENDALE brew house.... cheers...

these clips fail ,as I've found out a couple of times now,
the original chains for these Kats are endless ,
so no joiner link to come apart and drop a chain,
and then there's the hassle of getting the swing arm off to change out,
even though that wiould make servicing the bush and bearings get done more often.

here you can see how the clip wears
and can come off and have since replaced the spare I put on last month.
I ordered 3 new clips for 30 bucks the lot,off Ebay,
though the price varies to over 40 each.

Wow, clip only lasting a month?

Out of interest PATRICK, what chain are you using 530 / 630?

Maybe I'm not doing the same number of k's as you, but I've had same chain on since rebuild and it's done 15,000+ and have never lost a clip / like link.

Was thinking of changing the chain only as part of a cog swap to get better highway running

The clip I had as a spare back up was not new { 2nd from the right}
And so when I checked the thing after I got home
I was able to pull the leading front bit off the pin
and so I checked all the clips I had very closely
And found the thing ,[clip]had worn round
and so fitted a not rounded out clip { 1st on the left}

the chains I use now are the O'ring 630 ATV and there $100 delivered
and when they wear to the 10 mil. mark. so 20 mm over all or there abouts
I replace them
and the sprockets lasts longer, it's just something I've been trying out the last couple of years.
the idea was to save swapping out the front sprocket too often
as the thread on the shaft ain't that cash hot.
and so when I swap out the sprocket a new nut and plenty of lock tight is applied and that gets tightened to near 80ft lb.
does that cover it?

gearing up for a epic ride over East later this month, should all go to plan.
Besides that ,went for a couple of rides with Bro since he got his P plate
last month and easily clocked up 560 ks over a couple of days' ,all country miles of coarse

This is an interesting if somewhat scary conversation about chain links going awol!

I have 2 x 1100 Katanas. One is an original wire-wheel Kat that has a 630 chain with the joining link peened in place. The other Kat has a 530 chain, also peened in place. This Kat runs Mikuni 36mm flat slides, has 17 inch rims, front and rear so it can go fairly hard when pressed. Luckily never had an issue with links. What a scary thought!
