Have your boots disintegrated?

Not the ones on your feet, the ones covering the joints of your shift lever that are otherwise unobtanium.

Fear not, for I have the solution.
Well, from the *cough* Yamaha parts catalogue anyway, where you can purchase them as a separate item.

I had bought some for an RZ I was fiddling around with, and it turns out they're identical to the ones Suzuki used.

Part number to follow...

These boots (imagine they're on the same joints on a Katana gearshift)...

This Yamaha part number...

For reference, the one on the left in the photo above is the 'Yamaha' part, the one on the right is the 'Suzuki' part - they're identical except for their age with the Yamaha one being quite a bit younger.

Good Find!
However wish I could find a source for the ball joints that didnt involve buying the whole shift lever assembly.

Hmm...

You could try searching a Yamaha parts database - if the boots fit both Yammie and Suzuki ball joints, maybe it's possible to buy the joints from Yamaha as a separate item still?

The joints are riveted to the arm. Grind rivet off, use a rod end, nut and bolt. Job done.

One is LH thread while the other is RH...

You could use two RH ones, but you'd have to remove and turn one end rather than being able to turn the rod in between.

Plus, you'd have to replace the rod, or cut a RH thread on one end.

You can get LH and RH threaded ball ends.
Got some a couple of years back, a bearing shop up the coast, cant remember exactly where but they do exist.

Good find Paul!

As for the joints, I used some from smallparts.com.au when I discovered the reason for the wee beastie's bad shifting and false neutrals, but after 4.5 years back on the road they're flogged out as well... just not made for anything more than hobby use. And trust me on the wee beastie they cop a flogging!

Gonna havta try something different, being eyeing off the cheapy rod ends from China on eBay as they have both left and right threaded M6 versions, just not sure on how best to attach to the shift lever and the other bit.

Sorry, thought that was obvious. Ebay, CBC, bearing shops - all these places will have M5 and M6 left and right hand threaded, male and female rod ends.

I had non teflon lined ones on my RG500 to replace the stupid clevis ends - flogged the shit out of them for years and never had an issue with wear. Ditto I've got a rod end on one end of the Kat's current shift linkage, no play after 7 years - I'm not sure you need fancy pants teflon lined units, and certainly don't need the angularity of the studded ones (unless you want to try to slip the original boot over them and look stock)
"Linear Bearings" as a supplier are dear as poison.

Ah, my bad, I didn't immediately think the RH/LH thing was easily available.

And yes, the clevis bullshit on RGs is crap - I might do the changeover myself soon.

I ended up buying a pair from eBay today, not cheapies from China after all that but from the UK. $8.60 each including shipping.

They read a bit stronger than the Chinese ones so should be ok. I kmow I could've found some locally at a bearing shop but I just don't have the time to ring around at the moment.

Thanks GTboy, walked into the Yamy shop at Springwood today, and will have 6 new dust covers on Tuesday. At $5.35 each a bargain, compared to fleabay.

Cheers

Paul
