SD1000 Nunbers...

SD1000 Numbers...

Any SD1000 katana owners out there???

I've been doing some research on chassis numbers trying to get some idea of numbers produced.
From the Aussie members that I know of the lowest to highest frame numbers are........12/82 500675 to 7/83 500811

(*P.S. these are not the exact numbers to protect the owners privacy*.

Good start to your search Dave. The minimum number that would have been imported will be 200 units. The 1000 was not a big seller in Australia for a couple of reasons and it has been discussed in the past with people that were involved with Proddy Racing at the time and it seems at best that total numbers imported were in the low hundreds and doubtful that there were more than 500 imported. However, like many things related to our Kats, facts and fiction can become blurred at times as the years and memories get on. Good luck with the numbers and let us know what you find.

Cheers.

Thanks Glenn...Are you including the SZ1000 in your minimum of 200 imported?
As I very much doubt there would have been 200 SD's...

On paper there shouldn't be any SZ 1000. The 1000 was in SD clothes only as 1982 was the last year of Proddy racing with the 1100 class. The 1000 limit started in 1983 so any 1000 should plated SD however, I wouldn't bet my leftie on it.

Cheers so we can write the SZ1000 from the equation.
So all Aussie delivered 1000's would have been SD's from 83 on and a minimum number of 200 to meet homologation requirements?

There were Aussie delivered GSX1000SZ's
I worked for Suzuki in Qld in 82 through to 87 and they definitely brought them in and the GSX1100SXZ too.
Cant quote numbers but I know they came in via Mayfairs (the Qld Importer)
Qld definitely got 750SZ,750SD,1000SZ,1000SD,1100SZ,1100SXZ,1100SD,1100SE

Good info Dave, that's why I wouldn't bet the leftie. As I said, on paper there shouldn't be any SZ 1000 because the first 200 units for homologation to compete in the 1983 season were imported after July 1982 so those Kats should have been plated as SD 1000.

Not from 1983 Dave, the first 200 units were imported in late 1982 (after July) so they were in the country before the start of the season. The 1000 didn't continue into the SE Kat, only the SD.

Just to update my findings so far..

The lowest frame number (unfortunately no month and year) received is 12/82 500675 to 7/83 500811...This makes the total (so far) at 136 units.

Hi, I’ve had a closer look at my Australian Compliance plate, it has no month just /83, my mate has a Australian delivered 1000SD which is 12/82 500667.
I think some people assume that all these 1000 SD will have consecutive frame numbers eg 500001 to 500999 must be 999 bikes I don’t think we can make this assumption.

Strange that your month of manufacture is missing as they all had one.
I think they most definitely have consecutive numbers according my research.
But we don't know what number they started or finished.
SD1000's only came to Australian, no other country received them.
A minimum of 200 would have to be imported to comply with homologation to compete in the Aust 1983 maximum 1000cc rule for production bikes .
"This is my theory"...Suzuki must of had at least 200 SZ1000 motors and VM32 carbs left over...
So they painted the engine and carbs black fitted them to an SD frame..chucked on some blue stripes and called it the "SD1000".
