Hi All, I have been overseas and my 83 SD 1100 has been in storage for the past 10 years ( in Qld ). I am finally returning back to oz around december and of course the thing on the top of my list is get the old girl back running. It's been sitting on the centre stand with a cover over it in a lock up storage unit. Apart from a new battery, what are the other essential things to be done. Replace oil & filter ? Drain tank & refill ( with what fuel ? ) Also carbies. For the life of me can't remember tyre pressures either.
All or any suggestions greatly appreciated guys. What to get her back home to WA.

Hi RangerKat, I started a 650 Kat that had been idle for about 15 years with no issues. Definitely an oil and filter change. Take off the ignition and remove the plugs, get a ring spanner on the end of the crank and rotate it slowly to check nothing has stuck. If the carbs were drained you should have no issues, I'd pull the carbs out blow the jets through with carb cleaner and/or compressed air. Likewise if you filled the tank prior to laying her up. Dump the fuel, check for any evidence of rust. Rinse with a little fresh gas before putting in gas to run the engine. Fresh fuel, fresh battery, fuel tap to prime, full choke.

Tire pressure? People run different psi depending on preferences. I run 29psi front 32psi rear. With 10 year old rubber I'd pump them up so I could go get new ones straight away.

After 10 years. Itll be worth pulling the cam cover off and manually lubing the top end. I would then mechanically spin the motor and check that oil comes out of the 4 top end cam galley bolts.

Be worth pulling the pilots and either replacing with new or giving a good clean. You may have a sticking clutch for a while and the fuel tap may need to be replaced as well.

Good luck and please let us know how you go.

Welcome back RangerKat.
As per above good suggestions, I'm big on the safety side.
Getting it moving is one thing, but better to be able to stop once it's moving!

Suggest:
~ grease dries out just sitting, so consider front wheel bearings, stearing head-stock, rear wheel bearings, swing arm bearings, clutch lever & brake both levers.
~ drain fork oil and re-fill, but expect to drain and refill again within 500k's to flush the tubes.
~ look to flush the front & rear brakes till fluid runs clear ( old Brake fluid tends to be more a darker Color ). - auto barn have a good one person brake bleader kit that can do four lines on the front at once without disconnecting the tubes if you still have ANDS.
~ would drain the crank case oil, fill with new cleaner oil, run for a couple of days ( 100+ k's ) then drain again and fit new oil filter plus new oil.
~ Grease on the front and rear brake switches is a good idea.
~ don't forget the simple things. Oil for the clutch, speedo & throttle cables.

Cheers
Stuart

Those are all good points. I think you guys thought of everything. Good luck Rangerkat. You're wakeing up a Kat and I'm getting to put one down for 6 months. :(

Cheers guys, my thoughts were along the same lines that have been suggested. Just wanted to check with the knowledgable Kat people. Can't wait to get her up & running again. I did ride her from Broome to central Qld ( along the bottom ) but that was when I was younger. This time would like to send her back to WA by one of those bike transport mobs. Any recommendations ?
Once again guys, thanks for the advice.

Hi and welcome back. I use Bikes Only Transport (1300 735 468 www.bikesonly.com.au info@bikesonly.com.au) which is a door to door specialist transport company and have used them some 7 or 8 times to move bikes mainly from the east coast to the west. I have never had an issue and very reliable. Their rates are very competitive.

Thanks ThomasJ, they will drop off at my house in Perth or do I go to Kewdale ( or elsewhere ) to pick her up ?

door to door. They will deliver to wherever you want. Just need to have someone present at the pick up and delivery addresses. The guys that have delivered bikes to WA have all been owners and riders themselves.
