That's a good photo of one of the first.
Hi Mel, thanks for the photo and info on Dave. The reason this Kat has an oil cooler and 4-1 is because this Kat is the ED2 prototype by Target Design and not a production 1100 Katana. Why the sexy 4-1 pipes and oil cooler were never fitted as designed was a cost and time saving measure from Suzuki. The production Kat frame was designed and built with the oil cooler mounts, but as we know - no cooler. This photo also shows the flat ED1 seat compared to the sit into seat of the production Kat. The ED1 had no screen or anti-dive and not the larger rubber cowl fins as this photo shows.

If you are talking about the '80's; I am struggling to remember. All an alcoholic blur........... Recall the bikes but the rest?????

Yes mate the 80s, I was still in primary school and was enjoying the car and bike scene from the seat of my farthers dusting sidecar or back seat of the 48-215. Ive heard people call the Katana the Delorian of the Motorcycle world..... Maybe we are all just hoping to head back to a simpler time when life was great!

From the angle, the tank also looks a little lower and more streamlined, plus no fuel cap that I can see. Guess the prototype was very conservative on fuel consumption.
Didn't a recent new member from US post that he had bought a / the ED1 for about $10k?.
Ha ha, first thing I noticed too.
The ED2 prototype was sold at Auction in the U.K. a few years ago for 8,500 pounds. Ken Edgar was the buyer, he is a serious Katana man!
I don't have any info on the ED1, but that's not an issue really, it isn't a Katana anyway.
