Original 750SZ Exhaust V's 816 Wiseco engine rebuild

Ok.
Tin opener in hand, now where did I put that can of worms.

Most of you who know me and my '82 750 are aware that I like to keep things as close to original as possible.

Currently I have 2/3rds of an original all new black chrome exhaust and only missing the right hand muffler.
Well after 2yrs searching I have found the ellusive beast and am hoping to arrive in a couple of weeks.

The dilemma I have is that I was also intending to do a full engine rebuild with a Wisco 816 piston kit. Nothing radical, just a head refresh, new bottom end bearings ( possibly a balance ) and re-bore to 816.

Ahh, now the can of worms.
I realise that going to 816 I should go with a decent exhaust system and have Carbies tuned to suit.
Am even thinking of only fitting the original exhaust only for bike shows ( as that's my thing ) and using the suitable exhaust for everyday / event rides etc.

So there it is.

Open fire, any comments will be respectfully read and appreciate any advice from the more knowledgable.

Cheers
Stuart

No can of worms there, well, not for me anyway....

Do the 816 and enjoy, nothing wrong with only keeping the exhaust for special days, after all, they are made of unobtainium and you don't want to spend several years hunting down a replacement.
Back in the day, I rode a 750 kat that was 1mm larger on the exhaust valves, it went surprisingly well.

Hi Patrick
He everyday exhuast will be as supplied ( chrome, stainless, black ceramic - what ever).

This will depend on what I can find to suit.
Even thinking of sending the complete set to QLD for a copyKat set to be made -" insert game show thinking music here!"

Am considering a Vance / Hines or similar and be something sevicable.

You may want to look at Flat slides carbs with hi air flow pods attached to the ends and enjoy the bike when it is all done. You can come over and have a look at my Katana SBE set up. Also my SBE has a frame brace included.

Yep, agree 100% with Reg's comments.

Stuart, a year ago or so I heard a few 'horror' stories about V&H exhaust systems having dodgy chrome...May be fine now though

Go with the Megacycle - with the removable spigots........easy to take off and clean around engine and in doing so you don't wear out the exhaust flange thread holes......

Servicable . I've had a Tranzac 8yrs, it was old when i got the bike , it has been good in that it was $35 to replace the packing in the muffle.
what I also like about it is the lines of the exhaust system ,that it suits the bike really good, unlike a lot of others I'ver seen on katana's.
When new I'd been told it was $1500 .I've since seen them on Ebay for $650 but that was a while back .
anyway if you got a good set of stock black chrome pipes ,go with them, leave em on , they are just another nich thing that makes the kat what they were and are, just like the seat colours , half moon front guard , speedo/tacho and black trim over head light and back of guard ,seat cowl amongst more styling ques in shapes of fairing ,seat ,side covers , clip-ons and wheel sizes etc.

Thanks Derik
Am considering using Patrick's suggestion on his 'header bolt studs' thread. Appears a logical choice if I was to be changing often.

Nige - "oil cooled" normally is an internal closed loop not a total loss system - till you got nothing left.......
