oil leak from stator cover

my first post
I a 1100 Kat which has an oil leak from the stator/starter cover
What is the problem

Likely to be from the O ring on the starter motor where it mounts into the case, easy fix.

Nah, I reckon it's likely to be from some muppet using sealant on a gasket that is supposed to be installed dry.

Or with a delicate smear of grease.

I find it does stop them from really sticking (therefore being able to reuse them) and doesn't seem to otherwise harm the gasket or diminish its sealing abilities.
