Hi There. this is an awesome site, so much info. I am about to undergo a restoration for a friend, on his 1100 Kat he has owned since it was a year old in 83 I think. It is currently a basket case, but hope to bring it back to its former glory when he was courting his now wife on it. I look forward to sharing the progress on this forum. Cheers, Shane

Hi Shane and welcome to the Forum. Do you have any other details on the Kat like VIN, engine number and date on the VIN plate. Being a one owner Kat is pretty rare and after all this time it's great to hear you are giving him a hand to get her back on the road. Keep the posts coming and don't forget to post photos of your progress including the current basket case photo.

Cheers.

Hi Shane and welcome.
You'll find lots of help as well as differing opinions on what to do and where to go for some of your rebuild.

Enjoy, was the best 18months I've had for years and wish I stretched it to 24months for the rebuild.
Which area are you based in?

Hi Shane, there are a few of us here that have been down the full resto path. So help and advice with be forthcoming. All the best, bringing them back to life makes the world a better place.

Hi shin-ken, the vin is GS110X-529665, eng is GS110X-141580. 12/81. I have tried to add pics but a note says upload failed. I will try to reduce the size and give it another go.SAM_7633.JPG

Hi Shane, thanks for the numbers, much appreciated. Is the tappet cover a 20 bolt or 24 bolt? Thanks for the photo, it looks like a 24 bolt tappet cover or are my crook eyes playing up? Does he remember why the head was taken off?

I see we have another Kat member from Cairns this week, DaveFNQ, is he near you? What is the plan for the work you are going to do on your mates Kat? Of course you will have to do quite a few test rides I am sure.

Cheers,
Glen.

Hi Glen, yes i saw Davefnq and have sent him a pm. I will try to get in touch with him and catch up. I have heard there are a few Kats lurking about, i am sure i will sniff them out. It has a 24 bolt cover. The original cams are buggered, but there is a new looking pair of cams in the plastic, still with the protective Lacquer on them. might send them to Tighes to get them checked. i will try to post a pic of a rat skull i found in the box of bits. it will be cast in resin and made in to a key ring i think. The head was removed to repair a loose insert. He thinks one carb leaned out and caused one pot to run hot. the head has been overhauled but never fitted. it will need another clean-up, but looks good. trying to figure out how to lift the barrels off 4 seized pistons......

Trying to figure out how to lift the barrels off 4 seized pistons......

I haven't done it with a four cylinder but on a single we filled the cylinder with kero (you could find better these days- maybe penetrine or similar).
Then chock the cylinder up with wood and smack the piston tops with a hammer and a wood or nylon drift until they move. Don't do it at TDC or BDC as you need them to move somewhere or;
lever it up of the crank case with some lengths of wood.
The latter is less harsh on the big end and crank bearings considering they're not easily replaced.

cheers boogieman. yep, i have done a few singles, but not multi. Bolt-off is the best product i have ever used, amazing stuff. i will get a couple of tins tomoro and give it a go on the weekend. i thought about separating the cases to lift the crank out with the barrel on, to take any shock away from the bearings. not sure if this is possible. the crank will be prepped anyway, but still not sure of its condition. the gbox oil is like new, so hoping the innards are ok. it is seized from sitting, and rat piss. not lack of oil or overheat so hopefully not too stuck. cheers.

Not possible Shane. The crank goes through the holes in the top case from underneath. Then the pistons are fitted and the barrels put on.
You could rig something up to push the pistons out without hitting them with a hammer it just needs a bit of thought and the position of the pistons will determine how you go about it.

The bigends dont come apart, crank gets pressed together. also they have roller bearings, so watch the hitting.
After soaking the barrels with the penetrative crap of your choosing, pull the stator cover off so you can access the big nut and try to get it to turn over before using the big hammer.

The best penetrating oil is a mixture of equal parts of acetone and automatic transmission fluid, cheap enough to give a real good soaking on each pot.

Have fun.

Another 12/81 kat.... they're coming out of the woodwork now!

lots of good tips here, thanks guys. i will give it a crack and let you know what happens. best place to send the crank?
