New Member Victoria 81' 1100 Kat

Hi Guys,
Recently joined and thought I'd introduce myself. I bought my 1100 Katana in 1989 as my first big bike after graduating from RD 250 & 350 LC's. I'v had many big bikes since, GSXR's & Blades etc. but have always kept the Kat and have owned it for 29 years. It was sitting unridden for about 7 years until mid way through 2017 I sent it to my mechanic to check her over before firing her up for the first time, then got a RWC and club Reg on it. All was going well with the club reg rides down the GOR every couple of weeks. Unfortunately I had a rear ender with a tourist that without indication decided to stop in the middle of a corner! I walked away but the Kat sustained significant damage. Tank, dash, front cowl, timing cover, timing plate, pegs all trashed and general scratches down the right hand side from front to rear. Bummer! back to the drawing board.

Cheers Chris

Welcome to the Kat house Chris and there are members on this forum to help you with your repairs and put you on the correct track for parts. Hope the repair does not set you back allot.

Welcome Chris, that's a real shame about the bender but glad to hear you walked away.

Being from Victoria have you heard of Mick Hone? That's the place to go for those genuine Suzuki bits you'll need. Great service, good stock of Kat parts at good prices, and tell 'em you're a member here for a 5% discount too.

Is she repairable or are you looking for another?

Thanks for your support guys, I will be getting her back on the road, I'm going to start with the ignition plate and put a full Dyna 2000 ignition in, at least then I can fire her back up, the rest is cosmetic. And yes I am starting to really appreciate the fact that I walked away, I was shattered at the time about the Kat, better the bike than me, I'm still here to talk about it! Cheers.

Hi Chris and welcome, I recently joined the group too. I'm glad to are OK after your incident with the tourist, I hope the repairs go well with your Kat and don't cost you too much. I also have a 1100 81' myself that I had since 1996 which I am in the process of trying to get back on the road.
Cheers Andrew

the dyna 2000 have been real good in my bike for years now , what size coils are you going to use ?
there are a few to choose from , the grey 2ohms run nice and hot for drag racing, the green inter. go well on the track and the black 5ohms work
just fine on the road aswell. cheers patrick.

Hi Chris and welcome to the Forum. Sad news about your Kat however, glad to hear you are in one piece. If you plan to rebuild the Kat the good news is just about every part is still available new and for the few parts that are NLA used or aftermarket can be had.

Cheers.

Unless you've got a Dyna 2000 in hand, don't waste your time. Put an Ignitech on it, it's actually programmable and has a bunch of other capabilities.

Hi Andrew, Thanks mate. It was an awesome feeling when I first rode mine out of the mechanics with the club plate on, I couldn't get the grin off my face. The Kat is so much fun to ride, so much character, so old school...You'll love it.

Hi guys, seems like you've opened up some debate over the ignition system, I'll have to do some research, programmable does sound good though? my mechanic says that the coils are on their way out and need replacing, so full ignition system is on the cards, coils don't need to be anything other than close to stock items in regards to ohms etc, as the engine is stock. Is good to hear that new parts are readily available, looks like i will be going into Mick Hones with a shopping trolley. My next conundrum is do I restore to stock or custom???? I appreciate both, but I do like the look of a nice custom Kat.

Hi Chris, I agree custom Kats look great but I like my stock Kat too much to change it. It would be nice to have another to build up as a custom.
Cheers Andrew

Yep most Kat owners dilemma.

Nige

I agree with Nige on that however, there is a solution. Own more than one Kat. Three is a good number: one stock, one custom and the third a collectable to sit in the lounge (run it up each week of course) gathering value while you ride the wheels off the others and enjoy the smile.

dynatec 2000 complete set $525 Au

here is a little something on the Ebay for the dynatec 2000
read up on it ,this set has the mini coilsFullSizeRender (39).jpg

$144 USD for the full fat Sparkcer TCIP4, programmable, rev limiter, quick shifter, switchable outputs, servomotor output... plus coils. ($185 for a DCCDIP4 if you want the Capacitive Discharge version with all the features). Also has excellent support.
$414 USD for a dyna 2000 with coils that lets you switch between 4 pre-set maps, rev limiter, no quickshifter. Support, from what I can gather, is pretty much "It's broken? You must have hooked it up wrong. To bad, here, buy another one."

Know which one I'd buy.
