Hi All,
Just joined forum and have coming this weekend a GS650G 1982. Hasn't run for >18mths and don't know what else I'm going to find but looking forward to it! Looking forward to get some good access to people who can support and provide guidance. I'm Perth based>View attachment 5935

Update addition as I hadn't posted intro to this section originally-
Bike is now stripped bare and starting to list what's needed to rebuild> where's the best suppliers as I'm in Freo>
Welcome any guidance >>
Dean

Welcome Dean! You've come to the right place, plenty of knowledgeable folk around here.

Welcome Dean, glad to see another 650 owner here. Let me know what you may need as i have a donor bike so i may have something to help you with.

Welcome Dean,
Thats a good start.
Most of us vouch for Mick Hone Suzuki in Melbourne. Set up an online account with them and Steve there will be a never ending source of help.
Let them know you're on the group for a 5% discount.

Hi Dean and welcome.

I have found from personal experience that the only place to get parts in Western Australia is Mick Hone in Melbourne. They can quote, source (if they do not have) and deliver quicker than any local shop can be bothered to check and price. And they are very reasonable on freight. The discount also helps offset your freight charges as well.

Is this a bike from Donnybrook? Looks familiar.

Heaps of support on this site.

Welcome Dean, I too have Kat 650 that will be on the road soon. It's in original condition and the engine runs, but she has sat for 16 years unused. New tyres and handlebars arrived today. Got new shocks and all the bits to rebuild the brakes. Haven't decided to do a full resto or keep has the commuter scooter/patina Katana. Post your pics!

Hi guys, that was a big welcome and appreciated 👌
Tom, Yes it is the Donnybrook bike and wanted something that I could relate to from my youth in the UK! As have only dabbled with a few bikes since then!

Frame waiting to go and get sand blasted and powder coated locally, unless you have any better options?
Engine quandary as I cannot get as clean would like! So looking to strip head, barrel and side covers for vapour blasting and paint main engine casing.
Hi Minus, will message you as looking for side stand! But I'm sure there's more I will find!

Sandblasting/powdercoating for the frame sounds good Dean, but with the engine if the plan is just to clean it and not paint it again, I'd recommend wet blasting as opposed to vapour blasting, unless of course you mean the same thing... for me it gets a little confusing.

I took my 450 cylinders and head to this guy and the result is excellent:

I'm assuming there would be someone in WA you can get it to but he has bits coming from everywhere also.

Basically this process is non-abrasive, so it's safe for things like bearing surfaces and so forth as it doesn't affect the clearances or surface. I'm assuming anyone else doing this will have the same requirements which is degrease everything first and remove soft things like gasket material. Being a non-abrasive process means it won't remove soft material like that.

If your plan is to paint the motor, you could still do that process or you could clean it and prep it yourself, and the VHT brand of engine paint seems to get a good wrap for good results, planning on using that once I get to that point on my Kat.

Dean, try this guy for blasting. Bike freak and supports the local bike community: John Griffen 0488041104 (I think he is in Morley)

Have a great wrap on the Perth Cafe Racers site

Tom

If you have the time and inclination and are going to paint, soda-blasting to remove the dirt and corrosion can yield good results. This is using Duplicolor engine primer and engine silver from good old Supercheap.

That's a great finish and doing just crank/gear housing is where I'm heading to with all "removable" parts finished differently but probably heading to vapour/wet blast barrel and head, possible polish case covers but feel the vapour/wet blast will be far superior! as would be a shame with engine out not to do the most with it but no way want to break down the bottom end!
Getting the dirty stuff done re degrease big components so that I can start to make space to do the smaller stuff>
Gave the forks a wet n dry this week and look ok re chrome pitting not as bad as first thought! will post some pics and now also stripping the anti dive /modulators whilst on forks!
Thanks for sharing!
