New member - Chasing an ignition barrel

Hi there forum gurus, new member here, Matt. Great to see so many beautiful Kats here. I own the attached Katana 1100, and trying to get it back on the road after a 3 year break from riding. It has failed its road worthy inspection (ACT) because the ignition barrel (I think it’s called, where you insert the key) is worn and the key can be removed while the bike is running. Trying to find a replacement, part number is 37110-49301, but no luck so far. Tried Mike Hone and a few others but no one has one. Any suggestions on where I can find one? Any help would be very appreciated. Matt

Welcome to the Kat house Matt.

I don't have a ignition switch, but have you tried.
- The less worn spare key
- Your favorite penetrating spray lube down the slot, and working the key. (sometimes the wafers stick)
- A locksmith...
- Pull it apart and replace the barrel springs and wafers with spares from your vast collection of suzuki locks..( seat and helmet lock same bits)
- Something like this can be made work for the inspection, then taken off. ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364456153352

There has been a few us have lost the key on the ride, because they fell out.

Cheers John

Thanks John, appreciate the response. Had a new key cut but still no good. Barrel is very worn!! Found one this morning on eBay, but a bit worried it won’t fit. Part number is one digit out (49201 instead of 49301), but the seller states it will fit. Worried the mounting screw holes won’t line up, but will probably try it anyway. Locksmith is my next option if it doesn’t fit. I’ll keep you posted, cheers

Sorry mate, just realised the one you linked is the exact one I was looking at. Do you think that will fit, particularly the screw holes?

No it wont fit directly, you will need to make it fit with a bracket on top of the speedo mount, which will look ugly, thus the comment to remove it after wards.

Got it, thank you. Happy with that for a short term option to get it through rego. Thanks heaps for your advice, loving this forum already!!

Welcome Matt, your Kat looks good, hopefully you can get that ignition sorted and get rolling soon!

Hi Matt,

I just may have an older original barrel of you still need one, not sure about the key however. I'll have a look tomorrow.

Looking at your bike, it may also fail RWC as it has pillion pegs, and no pillion strap or handles... I've had a RWC failure on that one before. My bike is in at Mick Hones right now getting a RWC, and I kept the rear pegs off for that very reason - it has a custom seat so no strap or grab handles.

Hi Matt,
I do have the ignition barrel, no luck with the key however. Any locksmith can sort that out.

Hi Phil, thanks heaps for you response and offer, much appreciated. So I currently have my original ignition and the one I got off eBay with a locksmith waiting on a response. The one I got off eBay doesn’t fit so hopefully the locksmith can make it work by transferring the new barrel into the old bracket. Once I get an answer I’ll get back to you with an update. May not need your part at all, but big thanks in the interim. Cheers

Good news on my ignition key issue. Locksmith was able to rebuild the original barrel and yesterday the bike passed the road worthy inspection. Bike is now registered and back on the road. Thanks heaps for the advice and offers from the forum. Time for a ride….

Great news Matt! Mine got through RWC too yesterday. The rear pegs were an issue and had to put a baffle into the exhaust too and the list goes on - but we got there.
