Just found out
The good news is my starter buggered
The bad news is the starter clutch is buggered
The real bad news is metal from the starter clutch has probably gone through the motor
Better news I found a sd motor complete $1400 delivered so will be off the road for a few weeks
Cheers Geoff

That's tough, but hopefully every story has a happy ending.
If I can ask, where did you get the SD unit from?

How would the bits of metal go through the motor?

Good question Derek, the oil drains back into the sump where it is then picked up to go around the motor again, it first negotiates the the oil pick-up screen then the filter then pump, so that clean oil is then pumped to where it needs to go.

I'd reckon that all you'd need to do is to fix the starter clutch and starter, drop the sump and clean it, clean the oil pick-up screen, change the filter, fill with oil and you should be ok for another 30 years.

Nice score on the spare motor too!

The web site is www.findapart.com.au and getting the engine out of Sydney.

My mate that has pulled the cover off said Probably for the metal ,I will ring him today, there I metal all through the stator
Looking
starter $896.00
Starter clutch $ 330.00
Another motor $1400.00

I had starter issues - took it apart and gave it a good clean and now it tries to turn the motor over in its mounts. There is a lot of good information about fixing starters cause when mine went I thought I had to get a new one too.

As for starter clutch well they're just a bitch of a thing. But I too don't get where the metal came from. Sounds like something else may have also gone. Either way new engine will solve everything!!

I'll have to take some pics of the shrapnel collection that was sculling around in the bottom of my parts motor - starter clutch had spat the cap screws that attach it to the rotor... one of the cap screws is so beaten and fucked that it looks like a solid rivet. Trashed the no4 rod, no 4 liner skirt, no 4 piston skirt, and knocked some big chunks of internal webbing off the inside of the cases. Some of the shrapnel also suggests the big starter gear got torn up - there's bits of the web from it in the shrapnel collection too. There was shrapnel all through the oil pickup on this one too, and the inside of the pump was shot. Suspect the filter never went on bypass because the crank was fine once the mashed rod was replaced, and most of the gearset was good too.
