My 1984 Katana 1100se won't start.

I have check the battery twice all good, i get a clicking noise from the starter relay but still won't kick over. Has anyone had the same problem or knows what the problem maybe.

First- Check that all of the cables are tight, including the earth and then try again.
If no go-
Get a good piece of metal and short the main terminals on the relay and see if it kicks. If it does then the relay is stuffed.
If it doesn't and your battery is good then it would be the starter motor.

I notice this is your first post here and you are after info that may help you get your Kat running which is an understandable priority right now. I have a question of you though- How is your "Join Date" prior to the start date (Oct 14)of this new forum?

Glenn, yep intro would be good... but when you say won't start... will it crank at all and just won't fire? Or no crank at all?

If there's no crank at all, then what Ben said, but worthwhile checking your kill switch is on properly also, give it a flick a few times in case there's dirty contacts or whatever.

If it cranks but won't fire, then we get to things like checking to make sure fuel's flowing and checking for spark.
 
Hi Glen ,have you sorted that Kat out yet, In the last seven plus years and 70k plus I did have a situation with the starter relay at one time and while I was at it brought a few spare relays ,so if you or anyone else needs one cheap and in a hurry feel free to PM me ,while you are sorting the electric starting up gear you could have a look at getting a new kit for the starter motor , the oil seal will have to be genuine suzuki part in the starter motor not off the shelf of you local spare parts joint as it's much narrower that standard seals though the bushes are a standard type part as is the bearing , the armature on mine was a bit worn a tidy up on a mate's lave and it works great. now these things are a bastard to clutch start as trying to push them up to speed and through a leg over is quiet difficult so to do so requires bump starting them side saddle ,check out youtube and you'll find a few fails on that.

Thanks for your advice checked the relay like you said but still didn't crank so taking out the starter motor today to check that.

Ok thanks for the advice I took out and checked the starter motor took it apart and clean it and put it back and the Kat fired up like a new Kat.

If the battery is good and the relay goes click, then the first thing I'd look at is the brushes and commutator armature on the starter motor. You can confirm the that power is getting to the starter by simply checking the voltage between the relay terminal that connects to the starter cable and/or the cable connection and the starter motor and earth. When the button is pushed you should see 12v (13 something) on the meter.

600 grit wet and dry on the commutator until is copper clean. Spray with brake cleaner to remove particles and dry with compress air if you have it. Look for pitting on the brushes, dress these too with fine half round file. Again spray with brake cleaner and blow dry with compressed air. It doesn't take much carbonisation to short and the commutator and it won't spin up in this condition.
