Mirror weights

Hi fella's, one of my mirrors was cracked and the wife says it was the peewee's But l suspect a couple of six year old twins were involved some time ago. So avoiding the problem for some time and the fact the foam around the vibration plates had deteriorated finally to the point that the knock in the mirrors was pissing me off l had ago at removal. Using said boiling water didn't go well so am of to Albion Glass to get some replacements. To get Glass back in I'm thinking about a couple of Knicks on the inside to make installation easier but hopefully won't crack the housing. The question l have is are the vibration plates needed, has anyone not installed these? Cheers swoop.

Hi Swoop, good mirrors that don't buzz the image are a must have if knowing what's happening back there are important to you. Over the years I tried different aftermarket mirrors and repaired the odd mirror but in the end I found that nothing beats the quality of a Genuine Suzi mirror for the Kat. Crystal clear vibration free image everytime so these days I shell out the extra and go genuine. Used mirrors are good value if they haven't been scrapped to much and there are other Suzi mirrors that will go on a Kat if not having original (expensive) Kats mirrors aren't a concern.

Have Albion Glass given you a quote to cut and shape the new mirror? The messing around and cost involved (GS1000S and Darkside mirrors excluded) trying to rebuild mirrors in most cases isn't worth the effort unless you enjoy doing that sort of thing. Depending on what Albion are going to charge looking for a used pair of genuine Suzi mirrors would be worth considering.

Cheers.

Hi Swopp, when I pulled the mirrors apart I had, they didn't have vibration plates in them but noticed when I ordered a new gsx750es mirror,it does. I have not noticed bad vibration in the mirrors without plates in them unless I am sitting at the lights and they vibrate slightly in idle.

Not sure if it applies to Kat mirrors Swoop but might pay to check if mirror is slightly concave....if it is a flat mirror replacement (from Albion Glass) the image will not be quite right.

Someone here may know for sure, I dropped a mirror (non Kat) and the difference with a flat replacement was noticeable. ;)

Thanks everyone, l thought Kat mirrors were in the unobtainable category. Will make some calls to Suzi and Albion. On a ride 15th Oct and couldn't put up with the noise in the mirrors anymore. Will keep you posted.

Mick Hone has the correct E24 short Kat mirrors listed at $79.75 each. There are four different mirror types for Kats, the short arm type are the Australian model - E24.

Cheers.

P.S. New GS1000S and Darkside mirror sets are almost unobtainium, almost. Deep pockets will still get you a set, but they need to be very deep pockets.

Thanks Shin, interesting Price from Mick,he was on my list but haven't rung yet. Tony's was $91:65. Albion said about 50 ea so Mick plus postage is the go for shiny new ones, snail mail will do. Going through my spare parts bin seems l have a few mirror carcases hanging around, suppose they'll come in handy one day. On a different tangent l pulled the plugs out today after some mates said l had a bit of blow by on acceleration and after 600 k of hard riding used most of the oil up. 1 and 4 were perfect, 2 and 3 were wet. Thought at first glance running rich then noticed oil up thread of 2. Compression test came up 110 170 110 110 which might suggest a lot of carbon build up in two, how many teaspoons would it take to get to 170? Seems a lot, understand 128 is min, 100psi must fix!

I dunno that that's carbon build up in #2 - more like 1, 3 and 4 have no ring seal...

1 and 4 were dry with a nice Tan colour but 2 was quite oily Dark and wet but l understand what your saying which is why l posed the question how many teaspoons, it seems a huge jump in difference. Another thing l noticed was it nearly seemed to backfire in # two (impossible) and l had to jam the thing in hard. I tested each pot 4 times to check. I'll check the coils and sparks this weekend and see what's tha doing too.
