Katana Values

In the latest edition of the Motorcycle Trader commencing on page 100 is an interesting article about Katana as collectables. Page 104 list the current values as:
New (1982) $3995
Fair (now) $10000
Mint (now) $20000 plus

The loan bike featured was from Antique Motorcycles Melbourne

Thanks Thomas
Picked it up this morning. Also like the article about the GSX-R1000 ( both new and led )

what values

here's value for money NOT .Centre point wholesale springwood QLD Aust are selling a rusty old katana grab rail item number 54368 for $110 , I had to ask them the question, does he wear a ski mask dueing the day, does he sleep well at night and since these things are available from Mike Hones for $35 putting a price of $110 on this , is some kind of sick. really? is there anyone out there that would want to pay three times the new price for rusted out junk parts?of course it looks like they are parting out a Katana so if you've got plenty of cash and would liked to get ripped off thats the place to go,cheers.

I just had a quick look at the Centre Point Wholesale Ebay site.
It appears that the Motorcycle Trader magazines price of $20,000 is how much you can make if you strip a rusted out Kat??

I am even happier now with the price I paid for mine!

Am the first one to admit that I've bought brand new parts for my resto ( because I wanted it to look as new out of crate as possible ) and then sold my old, rust and faded parts on eBay at 1/3 the price to anyone who needed them and wanted to get a lower cost item for their resto.
But feel that 1/3 of new price from MH etc was reasonable.

Best options for new parts and good prices are definately;
1st - Mick Hone, and support someone who has been a support to the industry and individuals. Plus the knowledge base is invaluable!
2nd - CMS even though a little dearer and costly freight cost, the access to a worldwide data base of parts has its advantages.
3rd- and I have to say "based on your own research", eBay. But only if a) you have researched what the market average is, b) it's comparable in quality if non genuine, c) YOU are happy with the price ( beauty is in the eye of the beholder and value for money is in the eye of the payer! )

My discounted 2cents pearl of wisdom.
Cheers

$20.000 for striped rusted katana ,on the books might look good if your trying to sell a spares bussiness for a million dollars though in reality the bussiness is worth fuckall with the over inflated book price bullshit rip off and lie prices.

I agree with Patrick* . I have seen those prices on ebay for those Kat bits . He can keep em . I am fortunate to be able to call our local bike wrecker a friend and i also knew the previous owner as well and have a fair idea on what bikes have been wrecked over the years by this establishment . He shows you where to start looking and leaves you to it . Armed with a torch ( and old man glasses ) off you go . Its amazing the bits you spot for all sorts of bikes , old and new . Find the bit you need , maybe have to hustle a bit , and everyones happy . And realistic prices as well , not like Joe Ebay . Most wreckers that i have ever dealt with are usually pretty good . Most of them ride themselves . From what my guy has told me its getting pretty hard to bid for an insurance wreck as the big guys snuff the smaller wreckers out of the equation . Hopefully the smaller ones dont go the same way as the Milko etc did or we'll all be paying Joe Ebay prices .

There are two sellers in the complex and they both put ridiculous prices on their stuff but I've made reasonably priced offers and they take them. I think they're trolling for suckers but happy to take true value. Not morally right but then nobody got rich by playing by the rules.

There are three actually - Spinelli, SIMCA and his son who is also importing bikes from Japan. With the last two as I've said before they have a very liberal interpretation of what is a good rideable bike! Remember they are salesmen in business to make a profit and approach them with due caution........ But as per BM what they ask and what they'll take are two different thinsg so start making those silly offers.......
