Katana Track Day

Did my first track day late last year down at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth northern suburbs. Went down with a group of six with a round trip of ~1000km for the day. Booked into Collie Raceway in April (yep its catchy) which will be around a 2000km trip over three days taking in the York Motorcycle Show on the way home.

Was so amazed how well the Kat got around that track vs a bunch of brand new machines. Only 1 bike out of the 20 odd that I couldn't get past - not to mention I'm on the (sneaky) 750...... (Note the Kwaka 650 not included in the 20 hahaha - one of the lads I travelled down with!!)

Few changes required for next track day. Need to lift the pipe up and take off centre stand - a little frightening half way through a corner when the foot lever on the centre stand acted like a stump jump......

Cool!!! not sure if ill be on the Kat or not yet... Just bought her a stablemate which may or may not get the guernsey.... Still undecided... Its in the mail (so to speak) so haven't seen nor ridden it yet...

Race date is Sat 9th then straight to York that arvo for Sunday bike show... going to be a loooong weekend!!

Unreal Rusty glad you had some fun. The Kats run pretty well still to this day around a track. But they still can get a little tied up in knots when racing proper with some one your own pace on a modern bike.
But nothing puts a smile on your face like that when you pipped em'.. Hahaa.
Bike looks real nice.Glad it is all sorted now.
That track looks a little undulating? Not too flat. Is it good to ride?

Nige - its the same track the V8 supercars use in WA. For them its pretty shit i think - short, not alot of corners and narrow.

However for a track virgin it was pure motorcycle bliss - makes you realise how good bikes actually stick to a surface and perform - far better than the rider!!! Has one ripper righthander they call the bowl or basin, its downhill punching into it, a big vert/banked style corner and uphill coming out - like a bloody slingshot!!! Ya supposed to look out the corner coming in so your kind off looking up and over your shoulder, feels like your heads screwed on upside down - took ages to get used to , but by the end of the day this was THE corner!!!

Hey drillet,

still the 750 block with the following mods:
Ray Easson (WA Legend in GSX world build)
816 wiseco 10.1:1 pistons/compression
Ported/polished head
Oversized valves and springs etc from later Gixxer (not sure 100% which one)
Webcam camshaft - slightly higher lift, but longer duration
Not sure if he did balancing of bottom end (wish I asked) but the fucker will rev past 10,500 and still keep going... Keen to dyno one day...

The flat slides are brand new Mikuni RS - i believe they are the 36mm (would need to check the receipt again). Gave up on the CVs only because the OEM parts are not available for full rebuild (the emulsion tunes no less...) so could never get them sorted correctly. Trialled Keihin CRs with velocity stack and pods with no luck..... Even tried dyno and the bloke handed it back simply saying sorry.... However, I needed to do a top end rebuild not long after this time as the bloody valve stem seals were shot - they literally disintegrated in my fingers when disassembling. Guessing a bad batch were used during build... Im sure this didn't help the CRs

Flat slides pretty much went on as bought. Used some super tight silicon rubber tuning to mate to factory airbox - checked for leaks all good. Had to drop the pilots down to smallest size. Mains are down from 120 to 107.5 (still tad rich at top end until revs catch up so may drop one size further). Needle moved one stop from factory setting (cant remember which way) - mid range with up to the three quarter throttle response is superb!
