Hi from Hobart

Hi to everyone n a Happy new Year
I'm new here so I'll introduce myself by way of a brief back story.
I've been riding n working on bikes for some 46 years.
Worked as an Engine Reconditioner for 20 years, motorcycle mechanic for 6 years in two different dealerships, became a qualified Boilermaker at age 46 currently working as Boilermaker for Roadways.
I don't currently own a Katana but did have a 1988 U.S important GSX600F
Several years ago, have owned many different bikes over the years currently own a M109r which I have customised . I'm currently building a custom bike which is built from part both stock and hand made by me pics attached.
This brings me to something I need some help with.
The engine I'm using is gsx750 air cooled the CDI (igniter) is as near as I can tell from a 83/84 oil cooled gsx750 see picture attached.
As I don't have a original wiring loom I'm making one what I need to know is which components connect to which terminals on the CDI .
Have spent many hours on Google and have wiring diagrams for several models so know what colour the wires should be.
So if anyone is using the same CDI that could send a picture showing which colour wires good to which terminals or can tell which components each terminal is connected to it would be greatly appreciated thank you.
Sorry for such a long post .
Kind Regards
Clarke

GdAY Clarke,

Welcome to the katana forums.

Attached should help you out...info is from my GS1100G.
To put the nerd hat on it actually transistor ignition not CDI.
Thing to be aware of with these modules the advance is preset based on model. IE 84 may be too advanced for 81 engine,
listen for ping.

Enjoy John

Hi John

Thanks for the welcome.

And thank you very much for the info. Yes you are right they are a transistor ignition my bad LOL. In regards to the advance do the later engines IE84's still have the mechanical advance like the 81's if so would you recommend locking the mechanical advance on my engine??
Again thank you very much for your help it's much appreciated

CHEERS Clarke

Yeah didn't even think about the mechanical advance, you better find a way to lock it. (Or use fixed pickups)

From the service manuals;
81 gsx750 ( mechanical advance)
Service manual says advance is;
15 BTDC below 1500 rpm and
35 BTDC above 2350 rpm

84 GS1100g (electronic)
13 BTDC below 1500 rpm and
33 BTDC above 2350rpm

35 + 33= 68 degrees of not running so well. 😁

I do not have manual for 84 750 either ES or popup, motor was higher spec so bound to be slightly different .

Eg 81 katana 750 with mechanical advance
12 BTDC below 1500 rpm and
32 BTDC above 2350rpm

That will all be very useful info thanks heaps.
But is starting to sound like it maybe better to find the correct igniter for this engine. Would you know what the Suzuki part number would be?

Cheers Clarke

Wasn't trying talk you out of it, your that close might as well try it and see.

Suzuki Part no 32900-45120 might be tricky to find....

Yeah I will try it . The only reason I was using it was because I had it n have for several years but don't know it's history so it may not be any good anyway.
Thanks for the part number. Should get a chance to try this one tomorrow n see I have any spark.

Cheers Clarke
