hi from Bomaderry

Welcome to the Kat House brother. You should find all your answers here. Post some pics of your Kat.

Cheers from Canada.

Hey Andrew, welcome! You've definitely come to the right place!

Ask away, plenty of guys on here who know Kats inside and out and we all love 'em, no question is too stupid (believe me, I've asked plenty!).

What are the plans?

Hi Andrew and welcome to the forum. If you would like to nail down the model of your new Kat it can be confirmed by the V.I.N. and date stamped on the plate on the steering stem, if it is an Australian delivered Kat. If the plate is missing the frame number (same as V.I.N. for Australian Kats) will help. The V.I.N. / frame six figure number would start with:

GS110X followed by six numbers. The month/year is stamped on the same plate. Suzuki never made matching frame and engine number Kats however, some homework with the engine number can help with seeing if the engine is the original unit.

Depending on the date stamp details your Kat could be an SD or an SE. The GSX1100S is for all 1100cc Kats with the "D" or "E" being the year model. I would be happy to help you confirm model details if you like?

Cheers,
Glen.

thanks guys.

plans are to start with just doing the least amount to get it registered. at this stage, brakes, blinkers, maybe the alternator as the indicators and tacho don't seem to be working, chain, sprockets and tyres. i think there's crap in the tank so it'll be getting a cleanout and probably replace the fuel tap as well.

the plastic bits need some plastic welding in parts, and it comes with a supposedly original silver fairing that needs repairs, and an aftermarket red one that matches the tank, which may have been painted. the screen also will get replaced, i saw a very cheap one on webike.net that looks like it will do for starters.

frame number is gs110x-542007 made 4th of 84. engine number gs110x-172756.

after riding it a bit i may paint the frame as it's looking a little second hand, get a 4 into 1 zorst, and if the bug really bites, increase capacity and wheel sizes.

does "potential" mean i've got a bit of work to do?

thanks again for the welcome
regards
andrew

Hi Andrew, yeah, a plan to get her running and regoed first is a good one. Ride it for awhile and then decide which way you want to go regarding resto/custom/mods etc. Thanks for the V.I.N. and engine number, Kat engines usually have six digits after the GS110X prefix. Is there a number being hidden under some dust and oil maybe?

The date stamped on your plate would make it a:

GSX1100SE

The Australian 1100 Kats did not change too much between 1981 and 1986. Paint colours, wheels, frame front engine mount holes, engine painted silver for SZ and black for SD and SE, seat colour are the main changes between models. There are some other minor things but the good news is many Kat parts are interchangeable between models and other Suzuki parts will also fit and work on a Kat.

Looking forward to hearing and seeing your Kat start a new life. Lots of work to do however, when you fire up that glorious Suzuki powerplant and go for a blat it will all be worthwhile.

Cheers.

You're starting with a mostly complete Kat... that's a real leg up over how I did it :D

Ahh you're correct. Engine number is gs110x-172756

Hi Andrew, your Kat V.I.N. and engine number line up very well and it would be 99% sure that engine 172756 is the original engine installed by Suzuki. Original or replacement engines are not an issue but knowing that a Kat still has the original engine can be of interest to some owners.

Cheers.

thanks, nice to know.

doesn't trouble me greatly but knowing everying about your new toy is always nice. i think the last owner may have glossed it up a bit when he said i got the bargain of the century ;-) but you get that. i guess you're meant to harp on about the dumb previous owner, well unless they're on here ;-)

when he said he never had to put a spanner to it, i interpreted that as never having needed to fix anything major. turns out that means never fixed anything.

i know these are good motors, the frame looks solid, it's achievable. it would be nice to get to where i want to go without damaging the bank balance too badly, but that's life. i have a mental image of where i want to go, some of the details are a bit fuzzy, it's mostly focussed on me riding it so the ancilliary stuff isn't visible :-)

anyway, thanks for the generous welcome. i appreciate it

regards
andrew

Glad to help, don't forget to keep the posts and pics happening as you go.
