20160606_080114.jpgHi Guys, I have a 1981 Katana and am in the process of restoring the old girl. I am trying to make it original but its showing conflicting problems. It has a compliance plate id of gs110x-519187 and engine gs110x 129281. I have spoke with local bike shop and they say its a katana but its got the tank rear sets mudguard dash off a gsx 1100e. I have also noticed the 2 bars from frame at triangle angle holding rear foot pegs is not there. Any help identifying the old girl would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave

Hi Dave and welcome mate. Plenty of info and help here. :)

Sounds like you may have a slightly chopped Kat frame, one of our members keeps a substantial list of members engine / frame numbers and would have a good idea on how early or late an 81 model it may be.

Cheers

Welcome aboard Dave. You're in good company. I have a very modified Kat frame too.
Andd funnily enough, your engine number is only 10 before mine (129291). My engine is from a GSX1100E which I know for certain as the receipts came with the bike when I bought it.
Definitely put some pics up because unless I'm mistaken, I saw an add for two Katanas which looked like GSX/E's.

Cheers
Ben

Hi Dave and welcome to the Forum. Looking at your photo it looks similar to a Kat frame however, it isn't a Kat frame.
Cheers.

That's peculiar.
I wonder why someone would do that?
i heard once that one of the racing classes excluded Katanas due to their release date, (P5??) so guys that had Kat's, fitted them with Fat lady clothes to get them across the line. I wonder if this is one of those?

Looks more like a GSX frame to me. No box on the side to hold the fairing - plus all the other stuff

Be interesting to see what shape below tank looks like near the seat - as the two frames are quiet different there and in seat mount at back - as well as does it have the top fairing mounts at the head stock - or signs of these all having been removed.

I wouldn't get hung up on numbers - these can be mixed up or changed - you need to look at the frame basics - that will tell you........

Definitely not a Kat frame Dave, although numbers look right at first glance.

A lot of guys here also have a Fat Lady or two tucked away in the garage so still plenty of info about.

There's a fella in Murwillimbah NSW that has a Kat frame he's interested in selling. It has no numbers on it. I'll leave the rest to your imagination but, you're running gear, electrics, engine will fit and then you need body work.
