GS1000G Rear Tyre options

I usually try to stick with the original tyre size for my bikes and was happy with the Metzelers on my GSX750.
The GS1000G came with a 4.50V17 that I can't find anywhere and a conversion chart I found said it was closest to a 120/90-17. I was thinking of a Metzeler Tourance in that size. Looks almost liks a dual purpose tyre that I've seen on some adventure bikes. I like the dirt roads so could be good on both tar and dirt.
I think the Katana ran a similar size. What tyres are you running on you original wheels?

A good tyre and size for the stock 17" cast rear wheel is a 130/80/17 Pirelli Sport Demon. Good in the wet and dry and not expensive.

As Glen says Josh, the SD's are a forum favorite but there are 2 or 3 other brands that members swear by.....

Going with SD's for now myself.

What sort of mileage has anyone got outa there SDs on here? My rear is bald (slicks) and needs to be replaced. this 'was' an SD and only got around 5000kms (roughly cos I cant remember when it was put on) out of it...
Definately grippy as hell but I was wondering if anyone has found a touring middle, with performance outer for original Katana casts. One that gets mileage from cruising on straight roads, but has some bite when you do find the corners. I know you can get these for modern tyre sizes, but not sure if they make em for ol skinny...

Hi Rusty, yeah the SD are grippy so depending on roads and riding style 5,000 km - 9,000 km seems to cover most riders and conditions. I usually get around 7,000 km from my SD's which is fine by me cos they are very good in the wet and staying shiny side up is my priority for the Kat and at $300 a pair fitted they are pretty good value compared to some other set ups. Don't have an answer for you regarding your ideal tyre however, someone here is sure to have one for you.

Air cooled engines and skinny tyres rule!

Cheers.

..AVON Tyres are back and are offering a large range of tyres...I have no experience with the "new" range but as a "boy" they were a tyre of choice!...could be worth a look as I think they're more sport/touring than "crazy KATANA" and hopefully offer you less wear and more kilometres per dollar!

Back in the day, I went through several rear tyres on the Kat and found the 'Dunlop Touring Elite' gave me the best all round results by a long long way.
I haven't checked if these are still made but a tyre shop would know if they are still around or have a superseded variety.

Worst was a Chen Ching I had to put on in Richmond (Qld) on the way to Townsville. Was like riding with a tyre made of smooth concrete, ok upright in a straight line but anything else....forget it.

Old silver dot Pirelli Phantoms where the go hang on like shit and when they lost grip it was a nice gentle slide not to many miles but a hell of a good time now i don't do that shit any more well not every day of the week Cheers Murf Still love my Pirellis nothing better.

I have SD's on the 1100 and BT45's on the popup both tyres I find very good in the wet and dry, the bt45's are a dual compound and I get 10-13,000 k's out of the back tyre, the last tyre I put on the popup is a michelin pilot activ while it wears well it slips when it's cold and is a bit twitchy in the wet, I won't be getting another one.

Cheers
Max

I switched to Avon RoadRiders on the 450 as I was killing the centre of the SD's too quick on the commute. Partly that was a size thing as the SD's don't come narrow enough for the front (90/90-18).

I love the Avons... I feel like they give me a slightly softer ride to the SD's but that could just be perception from a different brand.

One thing to note though is that they seem to be a little less grippy in the wet than the SD's, but in the dry they're great. I'm pretty slow in the wet anyway so it doesn't make that much of a difference to me, mainly I just notice it's easier to lock the rear tyre up.

Mileage wise I was lucky to get 5500kms out of the rear SD but the first rear Avon I got over 7500kms and the front is still in great shape at over 13000kms... the second rear is still going strong now...

I would give Craig White a call at Whites Racing Products and he is at Cambeltown N.S.W. and i get all my tyres for my Kat's from him and also my track bikes and my Hayabusa. On my Kat's i use Bridgestone.
