Front indicators

Hi Guys.
I've noticed that some Katana 1100s have the indicators on the front fairing and some have them off the frame under the fairing. Can anyone shed a light on why? Mine is a 2/81 with blinkers off the frame.
Cheers.
Bill

Hey Bill

The aficionados will clarify for sure, but I was of the impression that all the 1100 Kat indicators were front fairing mounted. Some owners found that they protruded too much and were the subject of (expensive) fairing damage. As a result, some people chose to move them to the frame. This may be incorrect, but it is what I understood.

Let's see what other say.

Spot on Muddy, it's purely risk reduction! All Kats came from the factory with them fairing mounted, but yes, too many buggered fairings from a simple slip and fall, so many opt to relocate them (as I have done also, my fairing was trashed when I bought it from exactly this situation).

Hi Pete.
Thanks for confirming, it's great to know these little facts. Mine actually has frame work for the blinkers and no evidence on the fairing that the blinkers were ever mounted there.
Cheers.
Bill

I'm not sure if my fairing is genuine or aftermarket, but it's a fibreglass one (I believe the early genuine ones were fibreglass) and had what was left of the mouldings for the indicators. The left side had no structural integrity from being smashed in, but the right side was intact ready for an indicator to be mounted. I elected just to cover them up while repairing it.

You may find you have an aftermarket fairing, as I believe a lot of those come without provisions for the indicators.

Hmm, interesting, that would explain it. It is also fibreglass. I think it was raced back in the day as there is evidence of some narly side cover scraping on the clutch lever side and it has the 1150 motor.

Always hard to know what's been done before unless you know who owned it, and they're honest about what's happened to it.

Quite a few aftermarket cowling suppliers have the blinkerless fairings.

The plastic ones don't - being injection moulded.

Ok. So those are 1135cc. Quite a few other subtle differences with normal 16v.

Do you have RS's on or other 38's?

The RS flatsides. Probably the best bit is the factory oil pump upgrade from the 1100. I do have the 1100 head and cam cover, I like that it has the original look.
