Electricians of the forum- unite. (Not Kat related)

So, my trusty 'Cruiser left me stranded today for the first time in 6 years.
It started and I drove it for 15 minutes then shut it off.
Then it wouldn't start. I got a jump and drove it home. Just as I got home the charge light came on and the voltmeter read 9 volts. 10 with all the electrickery off.
Free standing, the batteries read 12 volts and less at idle.
I have to rev it to 2000 revs (4000 redline (6cyl, 4.2L diesel)) to get it to read above 13v.
I'm in the process of charging the batteries to see how long they last once up to spec.
I also disconnected the (+) & (-) and cleaned the clamp and post and refitted. The second battery had crazy build up of the white schizzle powder and the other (-) terminal was a bit loose.

Any thoughts? Am I missing something?
the troubleshooting procedure in the maintenance manual requires a 100A amp meter in line and load the charging system up but that's not something I have.
The other catch is that Repco have 30% off this weekend for RACQ members so I want to try to diagnose it before the deal ends (Saves me $100) but I'd also hate to buy it to save money if I don't need it.
Cheers all.

I'm working today Ben, I have stuff that will test the system but time is against me, not sure if I can do anything for you on Sunday but I'll see what I can do, I'll let you know.

Cheers Reg,
I've charged one battery. I'll see if the beast can keep it charged. If not I'll grab the alternator today. Thanks for the offer to help though.

Good call John. It was the power steering pump.
i gave the main battery a good charge and put the new pump in and anything above idle produces 13+V. The 2k produces 14V.
The only problem is that I don't have an excuse to not go to work on Monday now.
