Dyna coils

Just received my 3ohm Dyna coils.

Noticed when fitting that the coils wires are very close "but not touching" the mounting poles/bolts that hold them on.

Could this create an arcing problem???

Dyna S also arrived Ian...I'll post that down to you...;)

Yep, sure can be a problem. Took me about an hour on second visit to Frankie's place to figure out why he kept blowing fuses. Only discovered by connecting a multi-meter which has an audible tone on the ohms and systematically disconnecting all connections on that particular cable line.

Suggested Frankie put insulation or heat shrink on the bolts, but don't know what he ended up doing, only that all worked well and he got it down and tested to have rego

Just to be clear, first visit was to sort out the right hand control connections and get the lights & starter switch working. The arcing issue only came about appeared a day or so later as the coil might have shifted forward to have the terminal touch the pole / mounting screw.. Perhaps someone has a pic of a suggested solution

I've also heard that dialectic grease around the terminals may help as well.
Not totally convinced with this application as yet though...

Not sure how grease would stop two metal objects touching when their pressed up against each other, but I'm not an engineer.
Based on some of the posts I've read am sure there are many technical people on the forum that could comment on that.
For me, you can't beat a good old solid insulator. A small piece of plastic tube should do the trick

.....I had the same issue - fitted some fuel hose over the vertical pillar/post - issue sorted.

35 year old coils can let you down at short (pardon the pun) notice.

The Dyna coils just need careful setup.....

it wont, but it will stop sparking when there held close together without touching, as it eliminates air and its moisture.

...:)...I agree with Derek....2/ thanks Dave....3/##....WHAT IGNITION PICKUP AND COILS ARE RECOMENDED...DYNA2000?..I'm about to trail ACCEL COILS....OPIONIONS PLEASE?

Would be interested to hear if you can mount them on top of frame ( under the tank recesses ) as have been told the Dyna's can't mount in original locations. Also, is it the 140403 model the correct version at 3ohms?

Keen to hear how it goes

Here's a pic of the coils fitted.

There's about 2mm clearance from the mounting posts and the screw that holds the wire connections...top and bottom.

Fitted a rubber sleeve to the bottom mount post...will probably do similar to the top...just to be sure.;)

Happy to report the new coils have made a huge difference.
To the point were it feels like I've gained an extra 10-20 horses.:-D
Just goes to show what lies beneath aint what it seems and the importance of good spark.

Possibly a little more John...would have liked to of used the original Philips head style but they weren't long enough.

Put a rubber caps on the hex heads and all's fine.
One tends to use whats available at the time...;)

If your going to go to that level, you might as well make up a small bracket with a Philips head screw and nut to go off of the frame hole forward and use the further most mount of the coil. Eliminates the problem for the top & bottom terminals.

That's what I'll be doing in any case. Always a better way to skin a Kat

I just replaced my 30 odd year old oils with the superseded part number. they're off a later model bike (Gixxeer i think) and automatically gained some extra bang - no troubles either. Bolt on, plug in and play!!

I guess maybe if your bike is worked, bored, etc etc then coils would be beneficial, but a standard bike will still get extra oommph from the standard superseded suzuki coils? Im also not a wizard with electrics either so I may be wrong - just my experience.

Ok Dave
Looks like I'm going to dip my toe into the Dyna Coil water.
Can you tell me which ones you ordered?

Guessing they are the Inductive version - 3 ohm?

Cheers
