Back on 2 wheels! The 1982 GS125s commuter build.

Have you tried Unifilter/Uniflow? They have sock filters that are apparently reasonable quality and not overpriced is my understanding.

Yeah they do have afew options but most will require re jetting.

With the bike taking on a duel purpose role now I want to keep it as reliable as possible in all weather conditions.

I feel Im just being a tight arse because a new filter housing is as much as the bike cost me. 😆

Metallic sludge in the bottom of it. Large chunk of alloy in the clutch side but clutch basket looks okay.

So much metallic sludge in the bottom plus larger sand like pieces...

Not sure what to do now... The bike runs but... How long for.

Oh dear, looks like it's had water in the oil maybe? Not pretty at all!

Bit hard to tell from the photos but did you take the sump cover off?

Only has the oil strainer cover which I removed, the strainer was well blocked.

I've got some cheap oil here I'll do afew flushes. Once I can get it running with the airbox I ordered.

Hopefully it's a life of neglected oil changes and not a massive amount of bearing matter..

That's emulsion, oil mixed with water and agitated. How high up the dip stick was the oil level? If the motor runs think about a very good quality oil flush additive with cheap new oil to flush the motor. Give cost effective maintenance a call, they bulk ship to multi million dollar mines and give advice freely. I don't know what can be done about rust internally but it would be worth talking to them. Cheers.

Hard to tell but that almost sounds more tappet-y than gear-y to me? Are we even speaking English any more?

I've never heard one of those run but it's a single so likely to sound different to what I'm used to, but have you checked valve clearances?

Yeah valve clearances are fine they were actually within spec which was surprising lol.

For me it almost sounds like the main bearings are damaged.. still rotating but damaged.

I wonder if it's possible to assess that by taking the stator cover and ignition cover off and seeing how the crank feels? No idea if that's a feasible option or not.

Well...... Cleaned carb again used all different types of wire and probed every carb hole I could, made sure everything was spotless. Could eat off it.

Motor now won't fire... Hmmmm... Checked spark... Got spark.

Checked fuel, got fuel.

Airbox fitted, yep.

Valves adjusted. No need they are within spec.

Finger over spark plug hole, crank motor... Hmmmmmmmm

Compression gauge found in my massive mess of a garage.

80psi. Lowest recommended is 113psi.

Pulled the head cover off... Which forms part of the camshaft housing, the end section of the cam is badly scored so the head cover was as well.

So now I'm at a turning point with this bike.

Do I

A. Rebuild it.
B. Source a gs125 motor from a wreck of a more modern version that bolts in.
C. Bin it.
D. Find something else. Which knowing me... Will need work. 😆

The bike other than the running issue is 99% complete.

I Bought this for myself for turning 40, I wanted something to tinker on... I did however almost buy a brand new klr650... Probably should of done that. 😂
