Back on 2 wheels! The 1982 GS125s commuter build.

It's been about 8 years but I'm finally back on 2 wheels! And it's a GS!

Sadly... It's purely work transport and nothing to write home about. A 1982 Gs125s. I know I know... Prob abit to much power. But I honestly like the little bastard!

Plans are to get it super tidy, running well with some good tyres, ride it and maintain it. Commuter bike.

I'm putting 500km a week on my 4x4 for work that doesn't include weekends and I just wanted something that would save some fuel but get me out on 2 wheels again and stop the wear and tear on my 4x4.

Pics to come!

Those who will remember me .. I was on the old forum and posted a video of my uncles katana that had been sitting in storage for 17 years and I cleaned the carbs out and we got it started. Well that's as far as it went and the bikes been in further storage since then... So get ready for the Katana that's been sitting for 29 years! The project is coming!

Cool! That tank looks later than '82 though... does the compliance plate say late '82? Looks more like the GSX250/GS450 style started in '83.

I'm assuming that headlight isn't the original either, don't recall any that early with rectangular ones!

It's a 12/82 model and the rectangle light is factory. I hate the light lol.

I've managed to get it to run idle and rev but the carb still needs O rings etc as it's not perfect.

The hard thing is finding parts for the thing,

Ah so yeah it'll officially be an '83 model in that case, and I've noticed for the 450 in particular it makes a big difference in finding the right parts for it when looking at '81 vs. '82 (My 450 is 10/81 and therefore an '82 model, big difference!).

Interesting on the headlight, looks like the 125s were ahead of the styling of the bigger ones!

Can't see an '83 at Mick Hone but assume you've seen the '82 parts diagrams? https://www.mickhone.com.au/partFinder/fiche/suzuki/1982/gs125es

Not sure if they're all the same but going by that the carby parts are all still available.

Yeah I've been chatting to the parts guy there, the carb stuff should be available but the rest of the stuff I need is NLA

I've managed to get it to run with the pod filter. I'll have to do a plug check to see if it's happy. I just changed the pos of the clip on the needle as it was on at full lean.

Cool, sounds like you're off to a good start at least!

Not sure if you're aware but some of those cheapy pod filters have a rubber lip inside that can block the air inlet orifices if you mount them flush with the inlet. I have a set on the 450 as I couldn't find anything else to fit the GS500 carbs, and I have to be careful to mount them set back a bit to avoid blocking them.

Good luck with it! The other option is to get a factory rubber intake trumpet and put a sock filter over the top. That's what I (and others) have done with the Kat and as long as you get a good sock filter, it works well. Better than cheap dodgy pods that's for sure!

Have put through to quote for parts through Mick hone to see if the carb parts are available.

Was offered a gsx250s cheap.. looks alot like my first bike I restored. But I'm really keen on this 125 commuter.

Need to reform the seat with some new foam and vinyl. The PO had a new seat cover to suit it in a box but it's literally branded SUZNKI 😆

Eeeew! Yep more than likely at least a contributing factor. If it’s still available I had good success with the POR15 tank lining kit for the 450. I put some sharp/pointy *small* gravel in there to rattle around and get rid of the chunky rusty bits first (lots of firm shaking on all sides), then used the kit to clean it all out, prep the surface, then line it.

Certainly could’ve! I haven’t been on there for years but it would’ve been 2010-ish for me I think.
