Back in the club

Hi All,

Last year I acquired a 1982 1100 Katana from a eucalypt ad. Brakes and suspension were shot but still think it was a good buy, very close to original. Been around the clock so only 728 genuine k's. I have recently got around to start fixing it and after finding rust in the frame the worms are out of the can and the job has got bigger. I will start a resto thread and hope to get info from you guys along the way. I had a brand new 1100 from 81 to 91 so that's why I say back in the club. Old and new pics below. I would like know if the old girl is still out there.

Looks like a pretty good score there, welcome along!

Definitely keen to follow along and there are plenty of knowledgeable folk on here who'll be able to steer you right.

Whereabouts are you located? Also if you're not aware the place to order your genuine parts from is Mick Hone in Victoria. Prices are good, they know Kats inside out, and the service is good as well. Worth the postage costs if you're not local too!

Hi Motopics and welcome to the Forum. Looks like a very tidy and mostly intact Kat (including the original SZ front guard mud flap) you have scored there, well done. The pic of your new Kat from back in the day looks like it has just rolled out of the Dealers showroom after fitting a set of Pirelli Phantoms to replace the OEM rubber.

Have sent you a message, to read it just click on the Notifications in the top right side of the Forum page.

Cheers,
Glen.

Thanks for the welcome. It was certainly an early picture of my original Kat Shin-ken, didn't look that good after 70,000km when I sold it. Now if I just have to get the latest one to look as good.

Hi Motopics, I am sure you will sort it out. The good news is you scored a geniune W.W. Kat with most of the original parts still there. Pipes, shocks, centre stand, long rear guard, front master brake unit are still around, not cheap now but still available. At 18.5 kg original pipes are a bit of a drag. Unless you are after the full-on OEM finish the Kat as she sits is how most of them look these days. The single best improvement for a Kat in handling is still having good suspension front and rear. Kat shocks even when they were brand new where average at best when pushed hard however, if original is the goal they are fine for gentle street use when rebuilt.

Cheers.
