Air pressures

GSX400S Rider
Hi guys your occasional contributer here swoop, going for a beaut ride on the weekend I've got the oldest bike but not the oldest rider and after realising my tires are 10 yrs plus I've splashed out on some pirelli sport demons. Now OEM is 28 f 32 r these guys are suggesting between 36-42 on the rear ect. Now that's on 34 year old mags. Now l don't hold back if there's a nice corner coming up and the bike is as l bought it new any thoughts on pressures fella's? Cheers swoopswoop

Hi Swoop, I have used S.D. on my Kat for a few years now and have found for solo riding with the fun meter on "Sporty" using 25 psi front and 28 psi rear it all works very well in both the wet and dry. 36 - 42 may be fine for radial tyres but not for old school S.D. tyres. They will struggle to grip and the ride will rattle your teeth out and more than likely compress a few discs in your lower back for good measure.

Cheers.

Thanks fella's, just revisited an old favourite canyon chasers.com and they confirm what your saying although I don't know if it applies to 33 year old bikes lol. Comes down to playing with tire pressures but of course that's hard if your not riding every day. Cheers fella's

Hi fella's just some feedback. I ended up running 30 F 34 R . We ran from tomelwin murwillumbah mullumbimby nimben Killarney boonah some good roads and some awful ones, the tyres did feel a bit too hard but l was still impressed having great grip and stability ( no more death wobbles at 140+) . Next rides on the 12th Grafton way so I'll drop them back to standard day one and then try your settings shin Ken. My mate gaz brought his very special GSX 750 RR (RK) as a race bike it wasn't meant for those roads and one 35k corner had a bump too many and threw him. Man was he pissed off anyway he's good and bikes fixable, enjoy swoop.

Drop those pressures to what Shin-Ken recommends, should find it is more betterer.

There's some tasty roads down your way, Uki is great and I was only discussing the area with the chaps at Power-O this morning.

The kat might be 35 years old but with a bit of an upgrade in the motor, it is still a very capable bike in the twisties.

Yes, drop the pressure to what Glen has recommend and you will notice a huge difference and far improved handling. T

Brilliant l will, enjoy the meet on the 5th fella's hope to catch up with you guys this year for a ride and eventually get to one of those reunions.

Hi Swoop, I'll let you know when the ride to Norman Park for the coffee and yeeros is happening, it'll be good to meet you and your Kat.

Cheers,
Glen.

Or there's always March the 13th when we're catching up with Nick...

But good to hear another Brissie Kat is out and about :D

Hi Swoop, we have our annual ride to Nambucca Heads in July if you are able to make it?

Cheers.

Fella's just saw the other posts, I'm on a ride beaudesert tenterfield Grafton on the 12th but that ride to nambucca l might be interested in. Cheers swoop.

Hey Swoop,

I agree with Glen.
Sports demons are also very common on Triumphs, we sell a lot for Thruxtons and all the Bonni range. Factory setting is approx. 34f 36r how ever I live on the Goldy and when we hit the hills we will drop the pressures, that will very from bike to bike and horse power and also your weight.
We ride everything from Bonnies to MV and also Ducati up to 300hp we will very these pressures.
Best advise ride that Kat more play with the pressures write them down also write down that days temp. Work out what's right for you. Remember never give any bike a hard squirt on cold tyres and always scrub new tyre in for about 20-40k before going hard.

Ride long ride hard

Pauly

Hi Swoop, the Nambucca ride is our annual get together for the QLD and NSW Kats. For the Qlders it's a daylight ride down on the Saturday and return on the Sunday. For anyone wanting to do their own ride and go their own way that's fine as long as we all end up in Nambucca. We stay at The White Albatross, great cabins, reasonable prices, good service and once we are parked up, the Wall Tavern for food and drinks is less than 50 metres from the White Albatross so even the most wobbly boot can make that. I'll be posting up the ride and accommodation details in about two weeks.

Cheers.

Thanks glen and Pauly, l know the albatross and the food at the tavern is fantastic. Have our Grafton ride on Saturday so can't wait to try out those tyre pressures, cheers fella's.

Hope the weather is good for your ride on the 12th Swoop. Yeah, the food at The Wall Tavern is pretty good, I love the calamari.

Cheers.

Hi Glen,
The 87 SBE is booked in for a major service on the 18th April and the main man in the work shop will be able to find out why she is so thirsty and then suspension overhaul on the front and service the rear Olins and see how things pan out.
Also the 84 750 pop up will also get the same and will have her rego on Normal N.S.W. rego so here we go again. My 81 1100 Katana on H plate will hand the plate in as with the 83 750 S2 Katana on Normal N.S.W. rego.
Nick

Hi Nick, so have the painkillers worked their magic on your back yet? I am still betting the SBE has a set of mild/hot cams, valve work - bigger, and tweeked carbs to go with the aftermarket exhaust setup. Although your mate is thinking it has had a handfull of cubes shoved in the barrels to make it thirsty, big bore work is not the usual option for performance for bikes in Japan. It'll be interesting to see what they find when the top comes off and when they get inside the carbs.

Cheers mate,
Glen.
