About genuine mufflers for 1100SZ

The left hand side muffler for SZ purchased by private sale arrived from Finland a few days ago. The price was 158.93 euros and the shipping cost was 171.9 euros. As described in the item, it was unused and the height of the clamp was 26.5mm, but surprisingly the inner diameter of the outlet is 32mm. Until now, I thought that the inner diameter of the outlet of the genuine mufflers for 1100SZ were only 26mm. So I reviewed the parts list again. The genuine mufflers for 1100SZ with a clamp height of 26.5mm had two part numbers on the right and two on the left.

right: 14305-49300, 14305-49311
left: 14306-49300, 14306-49311

I guessed that part numbers 14305-49300 and 14306-49300 had an outlet inner diameter of 26 mm, and 14305-49311 and 14306-49311 had 32 mm.

Does anyone know anything clear about these things? Or do you have an opinion?

Takahiro

Might be genuine SXZ pipes.

Thank you for your opinion. I thought so too. However, the specifications of this muffler may have existed in SZ as well. This muffler came from Finland. Is this muffler 14306-49311? Are 14306-49311 and 14302-49340 (left of E27 SXZ) the same? Does anyone know about it?

Hi Takahiro San,

Genuine E27 SXZ Katana exhaust centre outlet diameter is listed as 33mm by Suzuki. The 20 E27 SXZ for N.Z. and the 25 E27 specification SXZ sent to South Africa were fitted with 33mm exhaust ex-factory. The pipe you have is an SZ so it is the correct pipe for an E27 SXZ. Suzuki produced a small number of SXZ 33mm exhaust systems as spare parts and these were available through Suzuki for a few years until NLA.

Shin-Ken San, thank you for the commentary.

Are there any official documents?

Have you ever seen the SA-SXZ with 33mm in person or in the photos? I have never seen it.

Does that mean there is no possibility other than for E27? Now I think so too.

Hi Takahiro San,

I am not aware of documentation regarding the SXZ 33mm exhaust system other than it was spare part and could be ordered from Suzuki. The N.Z. E27 SXZ 33mm exhaust is a genuine Suzuki part and Carl Coleman in N.Z. has confirmed the 33mm exhaust is a genuine part for the E27, he has a genuine new 33mm SXZ exhaust in his Suzuki parts collection.

Clive (RIP) from South Africa many years ago confirmed the South African E27 SXZ were fitted with the 33mm exhaust as supplied by Suzuki and he also mentioned the internals of the 33mm mufflers were "modified" for racing in South Africa. I have seen a couple of photos of the S.A. E27 33mm exhaust dating back to the 1990's however, I have not seen any recent photos of them.

Suzuki did produce another 33mm exhaust system that was identical to the SXZ 33mm system except for one item. The header collars were finished in black and not silver as fitted to the SXZ. These systems were available from Suzuki Japan, not local markets, up until 1998 when the last of these were sold. It has been speculated these 33mm exhaust systems were made to be fitted to the N.Z./S.A. race version GSX1100SXD Katana that were being planned for 1983 however, the racing SXD was not put into production and only one example of a factory GSX1100SXD was manufactured by Suzuki. This one example is owned by Carl Coleman in N.Z.

Shin-Ken San, thank you for always writing in detail. I also want to see those pictures.

Hi Takahiro San,

Here is a listing for one of the South African E27 SXZ. Pity there is no photo of the muffler outlet however, the listing does mention the 33mm muffler. I will try to find S.A. E27 muffler photo for you.

Shin-Ken San,
You mentioned this Katana earlier in another thread on the forum. This description is a second hand information and does not fit this Katana. For example, the brakes are clearly not the case. Probably the mufflers are not 33mm either. I don't think S.A.SXZs are exactly E-27.

Hi Takahiro San,

Let us hope we are lucky enough to find some vintage S.A. E27 muffler pics.

Anyone on the forum have any pics of an S.A. E27 Kat fitted with its original 33mm mufflers? Ya there Mel?

Cheers.

Thank you for the photos. It's the same SXZ as the photos I quoted, isn't it? Looking closely again, that doesn't seem to be even 1100SZ mufflers. I think the mechanic, or owner used the JDM-750 mufflers when this SXZ was restored.

Hi Mel, thanks for the pics mate. Unfortunately the mufflers are 27mm version so no joy for Takahiro on this one. I have had a scrounge around for Saffer SXZ 33mm muffler pics but nothing so far, if you do find any please let us know.

Cheers,
Glen.

Shin-Ken San
The mufflers are probably the smaller JDM 750, which is less than 27mm.

Interesting thread!

Looks like my 1000 has been fitted with 750 mufflers like the SA resto in post 15 above. I was wondering why it was so quiet. Not how I remember my last Katana!

From about 1:40 onwards during the rear tyre pitstops shows what was fitted to the Australian Castrol 6Hr bikes:

How many millimeters is your Katana muffler outlet? There is an interesting post about the inner diameter of the muffler exit.
