1994 Kantana 750? Some questions

G’Day all. I would like to request some info as I am a bit of a sticky situation. I have bought a 750 Katana recently with the view of exporting it from South Africa to Australia. I have done so in the past with a Honda CBX 1000. After the purchase and delivery of the said Katana a few items cropped up which has me very worried. (I did not expect a pristine bike but good frame and so forth with cosmetic work and so forth to bring it back to factory standard. However, there were a few surprises waiting and I would like to have clarity on this if possible.
Frame: GS75X 115329
Engine: GS75X 178790
It is recorded as a 1994 bike but it was my understanding that they stopped producing the 750 Katana in 1985? Would this be correct and how can I check on these engine and frame numbers?
Lots of info on internet but thought someone might be able to point me in right direction.
Next is the frame itself. On removal of the seat and tank a very curious fibreglass strut was revealed. See picture here:

This just seems wrong to me. I also could not how the tank is normally fitted to the frame. You can image that I am thinking this is not a 750 frame at this point.
Other issue is that the seat frame also looks to be fitted in a weird way. See the fitted sections as per picture below.

So, if anyone can shed some light on my purchase I would sincerely appreciate it. I most certainly would not like to import a Frankenstein 750.
Cheers, Auzulu

Hi,

cant help with the numbers, but the seat front hook should be metal - see exploded diagram link below for pic. The part is available at link below for $30.
https://www.mickhone.com.au/partFinder/fiche/suzuki/1982/gsx750s/seat#next

Duck tail looks fitted correctly, just a bit of damage around the holes where should line up with frame bolts.

Tank will hook on at the front and then has two bolts with rubber grommets to bolt down at the rear. This is the two holes either side of the fibreglass monstrosity.

Cheers

Thanks for the info. I will be following up on this in any case. Cheers

Do not know anything about frame numbers in South Africa... And unlikely anyone definitively does for sure.
But didn't Australian frames started with GR71A-xxxxxx? As far as I know 85 was the last. and they were GR72A-xxxxxx (popups).

GSX750E started with GS75X-000000 (as seen in service manual)

Maybe post a picture of full bike the many rivet counting members can identify models by sight....

Hi Auzulu,
Please post up a picture or 2 of the whole bike, both sides, that will help. Has the frame had anything cut off or welded to it?
From the photos you've put up, just looks like PO has added some owner mods, for whatever purpose who knows?
Cheers,
Rob

Hi. Yes thanks guys. Herewith some more pics of the bike. Lots of stuff I just cannot fathom as being an original.
I am ok to do some work to bring back to standard but if not worth it then I will need to reconsider.

(I do not even want to give details of the 1100 which was a complete botched job. 2 bikes welded together)

Here goes.
Thanks
Auzulu

Hi Auzulu. Hmmm. My initial thought is that the frame is bent. The frame's front downtubes are too close to the engine and the tank -if it is in the front mounting bungs is sitting to high... A photo with the tank off would reveal more.

I have some experience in these matters ...

That frame does look a bit dodgy.
The tank is way up at the front.
If it is bent it should be able to be fixed.
Laurie Alderton in Sydney is a frame guru.

Hi. Thanks for all the very good info. Having given this a thorough thinking over I have pulled the plug. Just too many questions and if I import it, it will be too late. I will keep looking around. I can tell you that the 1100 was a complete botch up with 2 different bikes welded together. lesson learnt here. Appreciate all the input guys. I hope to perhaps join the SOO next year.
Cheers, Auzulu

Hi, I believe the Katanas with frame numbers starting with GS75X must be a Japanese market model. And its frame number 115329 indicates that it is GSX750S-2 or S-2C. In other words, that Katana is originally a Katana with 16-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels. So now if that Katana has 19 inch wheels, the dimensions of the vehicle are not as per Suzuki's design.

GSX750S-2/S-2C : F.No.GS75X-114747~
